Calitri Castle

Calitri castle, as portrayed in Paichelli’s essay “a perspective of the Reign of Naples” in 1702, was a sturdy building endowed with 4 angular towers, walls and very good fortifications. The main entrance was on its south-eastern side, on one of the hills surrounding Ofanto and Cortino valley. Its northern side, composed of two thick walls, was more than 70 mt high. One of its best description is to be found in D. Castellano’s “Cronista Conzana”, who visited it in 1691. He described this huge castle, with more than 300 rooms, where more than 5 courts could settle in, endowed with two drawbridges, beautifully decorated and surdy impressive walls, four main doors, any comfort and very safe. At the same time Chianelli, called upon to appraise this castle, even described it as a “beautifully made factory machine”, evaluating its damages owing to the 1688 and 1692 earthquakes. The castle existed also in the 13th century, as testified by several documents, such as “Statuta Officiorum” by Winckelmann. In 1240, the latter dealt with its renovation and decorating works, according to the program of improvement, reconstruction and fortification of southern Italy, held by the king. Under Angioinis’ reign, the castle, known under the name of “Castrum Calitri”, was one of the official 40 existing castles in the land of Benevento. In 1276 it was given to Duke Fleury by king Charles d’Angio. Later on the castle was given to the Del Balzos, and finally to Gesualdos, who kept it for over three centuries, up to Isabella’s death, the last descendant of the family. This family always took good care of the castle, and transformed it into a wonderful building. In the 17th century the castle passed to the Ludovisis, who sold it in 1676 to the Mirellis, along with other feuds and properties, such as Calitri, Castiglione and St. Maria in Elce. Tha Castle was badly damaged during several earthquakes which took place between 16th and 17th centuries. In 1561 in particular, a violent earthquake with its epicentre in Vallo di Diano, produced damages in the whole city centre and caused the collapse of even two towers. Luigi IV Gesualdo cured their reconstructions, as he wanted the castle to be still the family’s official residency. But on September 8, 1694, an even more violent earthquake tore the castle down, as well as the whole city centre and many surrounding towns, killing more than 300 people and leaving even more casualties. As a consequence, the remaining members of the family decided to have another palace built, this time not on top of a hill, rather on the valley, near the old church and the Benedettines’ monastery. The whole area, where once the castle lay, was step by step completely changed. Other very violent earthquakes hit the area in 1910 and 1980. Since winter 1988 – 1989 B.A.A.A.S. council from Salerno and Avellino have cured the reestablishment and the rebuilding of the area, the city centre, its ancient buildings and the reconstruction of the tower near the so called “Nanno”door, which collapsed during the 1980 earthquake. Part of the city, the “Borgo Castello” area and the Nanno tower have already been restored, including the china museum.

The oldest core of the city dates back to the Longobard era, and was located on the highest hill. Later on it was to become part of the huge castle which was built in the late Middle Age. The hill dominated the whole Calore valley, and had hosted even other peoples, according to several important finds. In Tempa San Giovanni, on the southern part of the region, you do find the most important traces of the very first dwellers of the place, dating back to the bronze age (15th and 16th centuries B.C.). The city was surrounded by high walls, enclosing huts scattered across the valley. There are finds even of iron tools and weapons from that very age. Not too far away is Fraulusi cave, an interesting shelter, some 70 mt long, which was basically used as a graveyard. The cave was very well known to illegal diggers, and as a consequence underwent many pillages and damages. Unfortunately, only a small part has kept its ancient ruins and items.Â

The transparent waters of Calore river flow in one of the loveliest town in Cilento area: Felitto. This town is very famous for the locally produced “fusillo” pasta, looks like a rocky spur, and is known also for its lovely woods and hills. You can go swimming in the Calore river in this territory, which also hosts the river’s queen: the otter. The superb Calore caves can be crossed through a multi channel path. You can for instance start from the medieval bridge in Magliano, or along the riversides in Remolino. Pietra Tetta’s natural bridge is also very interesting, along which you can see old mills and farm houses. Further along there’s a breathtaking view. In the most narrow points of the caves, the stream can form whirlpools among stones named “marmitta”, converters. There are more than 370 different species of flowers and plants, and huge green grasses. Farnita natural park is particularly remarkable. Also very special birds and animals can be seen here, such as hawks and eagles.

The first testimonies about Contursi terme date back to the I century B.C. Plinius the old, in his “Strabonus books”, mentioned spa waters in St. Antonio al Monte. Plinius the old had an outstanding gift, to make “branches and leaves” turn into stone. The waters’ therapeutic skills though, were only discovered in 1231, as testified in the book “Balnea Contursi”, today kept in the diplomatic room of “Santissima Trinità ” in Cava dei Tirreni. Saverio Macrì, from the university of Naples, checked and testified these healthy effects in the middle 1700s. Later on Arnaldo Cantani and Eugenio Caloria added more tests and studies, confirming and supporting the good effects of these waters. The spa lido in Contursi has been known and visited from the early 1800s, but in 1980 a violent earthquake hit many parts of it. With its construction though, the lido spa has been improved and 4 more lidos have been created, all endowed with beautiful and comfortable restaurants and premises.
The town of Teggiano lies in a dominium position on the surrounding hills. Its origins date back to the Classic era, and already existed in the IV century, during the Lucan era. According to its strategic position, Sanseverino picked it as bulwark against foreign invaders, as well as against potential rebelling earls. The whole fortress was built around an old castle, dated back to the early 1400s. Many monuments can still be found in the city, which witness the medieval times. There are also lovely churches such as St. Maria Maggiore, where St. Cono’s bones are kept, the old protector of he city. The local vegetation is extremely rich, with beautiful shrubs, white firs, beeches, chestnut-trees, cherry trees, black pines, Aleppo pines, brooms, maples, cypresses and so on. Every middle-august, an ancient medieval celebration still takes place: “at Princess Costanza’s dinner”, dedicated and held in honour to Princess Costanza, who in 1480 married Antonello Sanseverino, prince of Salerno and lord of Diano. Princess Costanza was Federico from Montefeltro’s daughter, duke of Urbino. Teggiano lies 637mt high from the sea level, it’s 61.61 km square and hosts 8352 inhabitans. The local economy is based on industry (mainly dairy produce, plastic items and hydro-sanitary produce), and craftmanship, mainly based on the use of stone.

St. Lorenzo Monastery

The construction of St. Lorenzo Monastery in Padula, a “sancti brunonis” province, was wanted and financially supported by Tommaso Sanseverino in 1306, earl of Marsico and lord of Vallo di Diano, under the supervision by the prior of Trisulti monastery, in Frosinone. Tommaso had actually already purchased Montevergine monastery, which would constitute the very first core. The reason why the earl wanted this huge monastery built were both religious and convenient. For example, as the religious order and the Angioinis shared French origins, Tommaso Sanseverino, educated and aristocratic, was soon granted other titles by Charles II, known also as “the lame”. Moreover, he wanted to seize the opportunity to recover the area of Vallo di Diano from its marshes and swamps. Conversely in the middle age monastic communities generally used to take care of such issues and activities, and such a group like this would definitely fit in. A blend of political and convenient interests thus led the Sanseverinos to care so much of this monastic community and to protect them at least up to the XVI century. Unfortunately only few pieces from the ancient construction are still available in Certosa, such as the wonderful church-door, dating back to 1374, as well as the crossing vaults of the church itself. Since the middle XVI century, during Trento treaty, the ancient structure started being modified and mage larger. At that time also the “chiostro grande” and “scalene ellitico” were being built. The last interventions took place throughout XVIII century, such as the reconstruction of Refettory and the decorating works in several rooms. The basic feature of monasteries are generally the same, wherever they were built, as they actually were always to respect a “monastic rule”. Beyond the beauty and the richness of every single structure then, the iconographic structure is always the same. A monastery’s structure can be divided in two different areas: the so called “low house” and “upper house”. The former were used as working rooms (warehouse, stables, lavatories, barns and so on), the latter represented a space where only meditation and silence dominated. This division reflects the needs of a monastic group formed both by enclosed monks and converted, who willingly refused to join the enclosed order to take care of other issues and services. In the late 1700 this complex’s happiness started to fade away: during the so called “French era” in fact, the monastery was suppressed and the monks were force to leave out. The whole art treasure, such as canvass, gold, silver etc, which the monks had collected in the past centuries, was brought away, including the extremely rich books kept in the library. All this went lost. At the end of the Napoleonic era, the monks came back to their old shelter, off without the power they had previously enjoyed though. They remained in Padula until 1866, when they left for good the monastery, which, in 1882 was to be nominated “national monument”. Nevertheless, it was forgotten for a long time, and was even used as detention field during the two world wars. Only in the early 60s its reconstruction and decoration were to start, as wanted by the southern-Italy committee, though the definite impulse has been given by B.A.A.A.S. council of Salerno since 1982, which has invested every financial and intellectual energy in order to bring the monastery and its beauty back to life.

In the middle of green Alburni mountains, at about 70 km from Salerno, you’ll find the wonderful Pertosa’s caves. These caves, also known under the name of “Archangel’s caves”, can be traced back to 35 millions of years ago. Experts even claim they were inhabited by prehistoric men. The Greeks and the Romans turned it into a worship centre; later on the caves were consecrated to St. archangel Michael. The caves stretch for more than 2.500 meters, and are teeming with long paths and grooves; you can even find stalactites and stalagmites, which surely contribute and add up to their beauty. In order to visit these caves, you have to cross a little inlet: a boat will ship you to their internals, where the silence is broken only by the noise of water and of course, by the visitors’ whispers. After a short trip, it’s a natural spell. Stalactites and alabaster grapes are visible after a wonderful waterfall created by Negro river. The view will find you dumbstruck. You will cross tunnels and short passages, and reach different grooves, each of which has an own name, natural creations dating millions of years ago. You can easy reach Pertosa caves through the motor way A3 Salerno – Reggio Calabria, exiting either in Petina or in Polla. Opposite the entrance to the caves, at about 200 meters away, there’s a park lot. Scattered all around, though without ruining the natural scenario, are restaurants and premises where you can enjoy local good tasting food.

St. Pietro abbey lies at mountain Montedoro’s feet, on a a little hill over Eburum. Its beauty reflects centuries’ events. You can enjoy a breathtaking view from the abbey, over Piacentini mountains and Salerno’s gulf. The abbey was built by Benedettini priests in the middle 1000s, though many findings suggest other parts were later added and reconstructed. The abbey played a very important rule, especially among the clergy, till the late 1200s. During 14th and 15th centuries though, fewer and fewer monks resided here, until it was completely abandoned, as it happened to most churches located in Salerno at that time. In 1577, under Pope Gregory the 8th, the abbey was given by the Governor Antonio Carafa to the Minimi monks, who transformed its eastern part into a big convent. During the reconstruction work between 1930 and 1934, an underground crypt was discovered, which enclosed St Berniero’s bones. As a matter of fact, the saint lived in around 1000, and used to live in a cave opposite the abbey, but later on the Benedettinis took his dead body and kept it inside the abbey. We can nowadays enjoy the abbey in its full beauty, thanks to the decorating works in 1930. There are three aisles, supported by 7 rows of columns, each with 6 arches. Three columns are made of limestone, other ones are made of local stone. Every column is crowned by wonderful capitals. In the left apse there’s a niche with a lovely portrait: the Lord’s resurrection. There’s also another affresco portraying St. Andrew and probably St. Peter. In the central apse there are no affrescos, nor in the right one, though there’s a niche. You can get to St. Berniero’s shrine from the abbey’ s right side, through a staircase to the underground. The underground crypt also has three apses, right under the ones standing upstairs. Its roof is held up by two huge columns. There are several altars made of stone, and in one of them there are still St. Berniero’s bones. On the left there’s a marble bas-relief portraying St. Berniero holding a stick in his hand as he’s defending and setting a woman free from the devil, which leaves through her mouth.

Far more recently, so to say, the place was made a colony by the Foceis, in 540 B.C. who made it rich of temples, wells, spa, theatres, towers and so on. The whole landscape is also made even prettier thanks to a wonderful pine-woods. Scattered around the place are several ancient greek monuments and buildings.
The town of old Roscigno is a real path through the past. Time seems to have stopped here. Between 1902 and 1908 people were moved away from here because of landslides’ danger. Very patiently, its inhabitants moved to New Roscigno. When you visit Old Roscigno though, you can still hear secrets, traditions and old voices whispering from the past. Mystery and magic make the town a very enchanting place, a real time’s heaven.

Velia archaeological ruins

Your visit to Velia archaeological ruins will start from its southern part. This part of the city was built by Foceis, who also built a 50 mt dam from the seaside. This part of the city was later fenced by high walls, to protect it from the sea, owing to several floods and the shrinking process of the beach. The round based tower that you can still see on top of a rock probably used to work as a lighthouse. The other walls up to the Porta Marina South were added in the 6th century B.C. beyond the main door, you will enter the city and will soon be made welcome by Hellenistic buildings. On your left is a spa, which can be traced back to the 2nd century B.C. further along you’ll get to the Agorà , teeming with walls, columns and a rectangular square. You can then cross Porta Rosa street, along which there are two towers and the ruins of another main door. On your right then, you’ll find another spa form the 3rd century B.C. in typical Hellenistic style. This is a very unique complex in the Magna Greece area. The street will look more and more impressive and enchanting as you walk on the view of Porta Arcaica; Porta Rosa is particularly fascinating. The former also stands for the border between the southern and the northern parts of the city. It was built by Foceis probably in in the late 6th century B.C. Porta Rosa instead, was the linking path between the hills and the city. This door is the very only sample of a classic greek arch in a still perfect condition. The arch is perfect in its geometrical construction. You can then start your climb to Acropolis: on your way you’ll find ruins of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to 540 and 535 B.C. on top of the hill, there’s a lovely ancient theatre, in use even today, though not perfectly preserved. You will also find the holy altar stoà , a rectangular based building. On the upper part there are ruins of an ancient ionic temple partly destroyed for the construction of a Norman tower. Acropolis was the very centre of social and religious activities. From Acropolis you can also reach another area, dedicated to the cult of Poseidon, and a shrine dedicated to Zeus. Castellucio, at the end, represents the defensive climax of Velia.

Extra-urban Hera Argiva Shrine

The “Museo Narrante of Hera Argiva” opened in November 2001, and lies just opposite Heraion archaeological area, at about 8 km from Paestum. The showing halls are inside Masseria Procuriali, head office also of the local land reclamation committee. Finds by Paola Zancani Montuoro and Umberto Canotti Bianco have also been kept here since 1934, who had a very hard time running the excavations. At the very same time Poseidon was being founded, Hera Argiva (Heraion) shrine was also built, at 9 km away from the city, and near the Sele river’s source. Reportedly, the shrine was built under Giason, chief of Argonauts, who were very devoted to Hera . These sanctuaries were usually built along the city’s borders. Heraion, in fact, lied on the northern part of Poseidon, and played a relevant role for tradings and generally social life. Along this area local dwellers would also trade with Etruscans. The original core of the shrine was the so called “altar of ashes” , around which other structures were later on added. Two buildings, named “Staoi”, were built on the northern and southern sides of the shrine to collect and welcome visitors; two moats, named “fosse” were also dug for the ex-voto. At that very time, temples did not exist properly, though findings such as carved decorations and capitals suggest the presence of other buildings in the area.

The first town along Amalfi coast that you find from Salerno is Vietri sul mare, so named after its position “on the sea”. Its main monument is the St Giovanni Battista church, which dates back to the 1600s, topped by an elegant and luxury majolica covered dome. In the lower part of the town there’s a lovely beach, summer destination to hundreds of tourists every year. On the beach there’s an ancient tower which was built in the 1500s, as a defensive stronghold against the Saracen. The town is tremendously famous all around the world for its luxury and valuable china, the so called “vietri china”. The majolica industry has kept almost untouched its tradition and decorating motif. You can stay in a lovely cottage, completely decorated, located in a citrus area (the so called “vietri citrus stew”): Villa Divina is in the fraction of Benincasa, in O’Cammariello, at about 4 km away from Vietri sul mare (Salerno). Â

Cilento coast

The over 100 km long coast from Sele river to Bussento, and from Paestum to Sapri, is always changing: you can in fact find sandy beaches, wide and well equipped, rocky stretches teeming with creeks, inlets and promontories, all along breathtaking views deep in nature and history. You will find tunnels and prehistoric grooves, towers and every single item adds and rules the environment, giving it an own feature and atmosphere. Nature is both wild and neat along the coast. Many creeks and beaches were unreachable up to a few years ago. Nowadays they are very well equipped to make you welcome and comfortable, without losing their original untouched aspect. Ancient civilizations like the Greek, the Romans, the Lucans, the Latins, the Angioins and so on melt with modern tourism: still, the ancient tradition and history will always speak up louder than words. The whole coast is also rich of wonderful towers. They were all built as a defensive means against the Saracens and the Turks, since 1566, first from local dwellers, and later to accomplish the Reign of Naples’ kings’ will. Nowadays these very towers are scattered along the coast, and can be seen either from private houses or from trendy premises and night-clubs. You can still feel a sort of romanticism around them. Most the towers built by the locals are circular based, whereas the ones built under the Reign of Naples are generally square-based. As far as nature is concerned, typical Mediterranean spicy plants melt with brooms and green shrubs, such as Aleppo pines; between Mingardo and Ferone tower, near Marina di Camerota, you can still find a huge pine forest, probably the very only one left throughout southern Italy.

Buffaloes

Today our buffaloes have been acknowledged as “ Mediterranean Italian buffaloes”, and not simply “Mediterranean”. This is the very result of a long process of rearing and breeding typical local buffaloes, without letting any other species join in. Like other species, such as the so named podolic cattle, also buffaloes seem to have been brought to Italy through the barbaric invasions, probably by the Longobards. Some other scientists though, claim they were introduced by the Saracen and the Turks. According to the latter theory, buffaloes were first introduced to Sicily, and later on brought along up to Campania and Latium. Thanks to the buffaloes, several areas have been saved from thorough neglect and abandon. Rather, the very only agricultural and zootechnical activity in the Sele plain was the buffalo rearing, which enable people to produce cheese and the typical buffalo mozzarella. This has always been a very relevant and outstanding activity for our region. Today, thanks also to the land reclaiming and improvement process, the buffalo rearing is still widening and growing. Buffaloes are cured and taken care of. Where there used to be marshes and swamps, there are now fenced areas for buffaloes, endowed with even special patios to protect them from too hot temperatures. Health standards are highly respected and complied to. Buffalo’s raw unpasteurized milk is used to mainly to produce out typical cheese, mozzarella.

links:

www.anasb.it

www.consorzioalba.com

This is probably the most beautiful part in the whole Camapania region, where humanity and nature match best. The whole Lattari mountains’ row give directly to the sea, and create a beautifully jabbed coast. Private lawns and fields coexist with the natural beauty, typically Mediterranean. Part of the coast is still uncontaminated and untouched by human beings and whoever comes here will definitely get dumbstruck and fascinated by such beauty, where nature is mixed with local Folklore, culture, history, good food and old proverbs….

The Paestum national horse riding competition has resumed an old tradition from the late decades of the last century. These competitions used to take place in Campo di Marte, Salerno. The competition actually was aimed to select the competitors due to play in the international games which would take place in Rome. All the most famous knights and horseriders would join in and take part. The Paestum national horse riding competition represents a high equestrian momentum and can boast the presence of the most famous field directors such as Mr Marcello Mastronardi, Raimondo d’Inzeo and Giovanni Bussu, as well as the most famous Italian Knights.

Cottabus game

Cottabus was a very trendy and popular game much enjoyed among ancient Greeks and Etruscans. All that we know about the game is thanks to the samples found in the ruins, the paintings and scattered descriptions handed over by the old. The main instrument of the game was named itself Cottabus too. Alceus and Anacreontis did mention the game in their writings dating 6th century B.C. you can also find pictures representing this game on many vases. The game was the most beloved one played especially at luncheons and banquettes. The passion for this game was outstanding and widespread throughout Sicily. According to the sources, there used to be two ways of playing:
1: you were expected to toss some wine drops lying in at the bottom of your bowl against little vases floating in a water container. The winner was the player who was able to hit most vases, and, as an award, he would receive eggs, flour, sweets and last but not least, omen, especially in love affairs.
2: according to Antifones, in order to properly, you needed three items: a vertical bar, whose length would vary somewhere between 1.30 meters and 2 meters. The bar was expected to have a very cutting point, whereas the other extremity would be stuck in a heavy base. On the upper extremity a dangling disk would be put. Another larger disk would be slipped in the middle of the bar. The player was to toss some objects, or even food, to the little top disk, which was expected to fall onto the larger central one, named Manes.

This game was played up to the 3rd century B.C., then fell into disuse. The Romans never knew Cottabus.

at the moment, the Virtual 3d reconstruction Paestumgate considers the northern part of Paestum ruins, which ranges from the so called Cecere Temple up to Forum square. The structures reflect the urban setting of the roman imperial era, according to the newest archaeological researches. Nevertheless, for sheer teaching reasons, buildings and constructions from the ancient greek and lucan era have been kept here, such as Sacello hypogeic and the ekklesiasterion, which were actually partly destroyed during the roman conquest. Moreover, the roman constructions themselves actually belong to different eras and have been restored during the years. As a consequence, it is very hard, if not impossible at all, to trace a building back to its very original period. As a consequence, for teaching reasons you will find in Paestum different buildings from different periods all together, representing and forming a timeless city, where eras overlap and intermingle. You can generally speak of a roman imperial time though.
You will nevertheless read on each building its history and evolution. The player can freely explore buildings, rooms and environments of virtual Paestum, and can get an insight of the old city, its events and use, celebrations, and everyday scenes, set in paths and itineries which will foster and quench your thirst of knowledge . Players will thus discover and find out about the ancient city and its monuments, according to the actual state of the site, as well as to all the finds here dug out and kept in the museum.
We are even planning to add another factor: time. Through time, players will even be able to reconstruct different eras, from the greek to the roman times, with their own urban settings. Through such a reconstruction, moreover, players will get a better knowledge and awareness about the different urban settings and the proper history of the city.

According to the legend, Strabonus, the ancient greek geographer form the first century B.C., wrote about Giason and the Argonauts that, after grabbing the golden ram, reached the beaches in Sele plain and had a temple built, dedicated to Hera Argiva.
Historians, conversely, claim that in this area a colony from Sibari settled down in the middle 7th century B.C., determined and committed to build a harbour on the Mediterranean sea. As time passed by, the colony would thrive more and more, and turned into the main city of Poseidon. Thanks to its naturally favourable position, Poseidon and its motherland Sibari started busyness and tradings with Etruscans. The finding of amphoras and other archaeological finds testify such a correspondence. Poseidon soon became one of the most important cities in the Mediterranean area. In 510 B.C. Crotone attacked and torn down Sibari: its inhabitants fled to Poseidon bringing all their richness along. At this time the first temples and monuments started to be built. In 400 B.C. the city was conquered by the Lucans, who gave the name of Paistom to it, or Paistos. After several other mishaps, in 273 B.C. the city was made part of the roman empire, and became Paestum. Under Rome, the city resumed its ancient splendour and the building of new temples. During Christian era, Paestum also became an important city where many members of the clergy settled down. Because of a malaria epidemic though, the population decreased substantially. During the following centuries, Paestum was deeper and deeper covered by woods and marshes, and became thoroughly hidden eventually. It was to be discovered and its beauties brought back to life in the 19th century, under king Charles of Borbon . More and more historians and archaeologists became interested and fascinated by this ancient city’s beauty. Today this site is a big pentagon plain, surrounded by sturdy walls and is endowed with 4 ancient main doors; two main roads meet forming a perfect right angle.
